Gear Usage Table

The bicycle gear calculators gear usage table can be selected from the Tools menu of the gear calculator's main form, by right clicking the gearing diagram, or by clicking the Gear Usage Table button on the cadence calculator:

Gear usage table

The table contains the rules that will be used by the cadence calculator when Auto select and Link are selected. These rules are also used by the automatic Assessment feature. The example above shows a sensible way of using 16 gears out of a possible 30, avoiding excessive sideways stretch of the chain. The ticked check boxes represent gears that will be used, the rest will be ignored. Lurking behind the Suggest button is some code that decides on the best route through your gears by weeding out all the smallest steps, starting with the biggest chain angles. This will not necessarily be the best route through the groupset from the point of view of optimizing cadence. Try adjusting the chain alignment until the suggestion matches your manual suggestion. The chain alignment diagram now shows how the cogs should align for maximum efficiency with your chosen gear usage.

The rules that you define will be saved along with your cog values, so each file can have a different default set of rules. When you change the number of chainring or freewheel cogs this table will show all of the boxes ticked.
