The Spoke Pattern Explorer for Wheel Builders

The spoke pattern explorer allows wheel builders to verify that it is possible to build a wheel using the supplied measurements and a given number of spoke crossings. It produces a scale drawing based on the wheel hub and rim measurements you have supplied. The spoke pattern explorer is supplied as part of the spoke length calculator

You can zoom in on the hub detail and visually check if the spokes will bind.

Zoomed view on 3 cross 36 spoke bike wheel, showing spokes nearly tangential (correct)
Zoomed view on 4 cross 36 spoke bike wheel, showing spokes touching at the hib flange (this will not work!)

The picture on the left shows a standard 36 spoke 3 cross bicycle wheel, with spokes nearly tangential to the hub flange. On the right, increasing the number of crossings to four, causes the spokes to bind. I.e. The shaft of one spoke is touching the protruding end of the adjacent spoke.
