Getting Listed On A Machinehead Software Links Page

Although the Machinehead site contains several links pages I am not a "links site". My site currently features several pages of free web site listings and this will continue indefinitely. The free listings pages include: Cycling Links, Music Links, Traffic Cone Humour and People Called Nigel Jones

You ought to be able to get a good idea as to whether your site will be listed by looking at the categories, and the other sites listed already. For example to get listed on my cycling links page, your site must be about cycling. New submissions for the categories of Worthy Cyclist's Organizations, Cycling Coaches, and Cycling Clubs are always welcome and will allways be free. These sites represent the grass roots of cycling and typically provide a wealth of information for free that is likely to be of interest to the customers for my cycle software. New search engines are also always welcome, providing that your search engine isn't paid for listings only. Even if your search engine is currently a bit naff, it is still welcome - some will improve, others will die but they all provide useful sources of information.

Similar general guidelines apply to the other listings. I have a preference for quality non commercial sites, and sites that are unique or funny. I prefer listing little guys to cooperate giants. So if your site is just another bike shop etc, offering similar services to those of many others, or your site is simply an excuse to post as many advertising banners as possible. Then your chances of getting listed for free are greatly reduced in comparison with genuine cycling clubs, cycling coaches, music sites etc.

Links back to my site are always appreciated. However its worth pointing out that many of the sites listed do not link me back, and a link back is not a requirement for me to list you. If I happen to find your site while surfing the web, and I like it sufficiently, the chances are I will add your link without even bothering to email you requesting a link back. A link back only becomes important in the event of a borderline decision - I'm only human after all.

• It could take a couple of months or more before your link appears.
• You probably will not get a reply to your email
• If I don't like your site I will not list you
• If you spam me with endless emails I will not list you
• If you mis-represent your site (eg describe your bike shop as a cycling club, your John Smith site as a Nigel Jones site, or your porn site as traffic cones etc) I will not list you
• If you paste my javascript calcs into your site and attempt to pass them off as your own work I will never list you

Please will you also bear in mind that my software downloads, and links pages have always been subsidized by the proceeds from various day time jobs. I'm currently between jobs and have been between jobs for longer than is healthy. My web connection is currently via a rather slow dial up modem. This costs me by the minute and most of the time I currently spend on line is for the purposes of seeking employment. Ask yourself, why should I be interested in listing or even visiting your commercial site when I don't have any money to spend on your products and/or services? And how sympathetic do you think I will be to requests from the webmasters of fat cat sites who wish to treat me as a free listings service?

If having read the above, you still think that you have the kind of site that I would love to link to on one of my free listings. Its quite possible that you are right. It could be that due to the stresses of being between jobs etc. I might simply have been unable to find time to take a look, and/or your email may be buried deep in my inbox. If so please accept my apologies and feel free to resubmit your link.

If you are a corporate fat cat webmaster with the kind of site that I'm obviously not going to be interested in listing for free. It is still possible for you to get listed as a Machinehead Sponsor. But these will always be clearly identified as sponsored links and the rented space will normally be purchased on the basis of at least six months in advance.
