The Resting Energy Requirement calculator is a bonus feature of the PowerCalc Cyclists Power Calculator
Just enter your weight, height, age and sex and PowerCalc does the rest.
If the Sleeping option is selected calorific requirements are calculated using the Harris-Benedict equation, using the riders weight, height, age, and sex. This is given in Dennis K. Flood, Practical Math for Health Fitness Professionals, 1996, Human Kinetics, ISBN 0-87322-758-1 as:Apparently the values are about 10% lower for females because of their higher percentage of body fat. If lean tissue mass weight used instead of total body weight then there would be little or no difference. Obviously lean tissue weight is more difficult to establish. Females are considered to be around 16% to 25% fat, males about 12% to 18%.
The values for an average male give good agreement with Manual of Nutrition (HMSO, 9th edition, 1985) (1.1kcal/min sleeping), which also gives values for sitting (1.4 kcal/min) and standing (1.7kcal/min). The values for the rider in the sitting and standing positions are obtained by multiplying the sleeping value by (1.4/1.1) or (1.7/1.1) respectively. By default a cyclist is assumed to be sitting.
